Except for John Kass, the big losers in the Trib redesign are the metro columnists-Mary Schmich, Dawn Trice, and Eric Zorn (not coincidentally, all winners of CMW's Studs Terkel Award). I used to almost always know at least what they were up to from the headlines in their appointed places.
Now I find them only occasionally (maybe their names should be bigger, or instead of headshots they should have more glamor shots on the page by their byline? I dunno).
It's even worse with the otherwise nice Trib mobile edition, BTW. I drafted this post on my treo (hey, the bus was moving real slow, and I forgot a book, and it was too crowded to yank out the laptop) and couldn't even find Mary's pieces--call me a dummy but I did spend more than 5 minutes searching (Mary Schmich brought up 1 recent column, Schmich brought up a few that led to broken links. Huh?)
Why even be in print news if you're not gonna treat your columnists like royalty?
